Meet our eye Doctor

Bill Henshaw, OD, FCOVD

We change lives through innovative vision care.

Dr. Bill Henshaw, OD, FCOVD a Developmental Optometrist in Lodi, California
Dr. Bill Henshaw is a developmental optometrist in Lodi specializing in vision therapy, visual processing, and comprehensive functional vision care for children and adults. For more than 5 decades, he has provided thoughtful, individualized optometric services, emphasizing how vision supports learning, comfort, and daily performance. That's the way our eye doctor thinks as he treats you.

Education & Military Service

Dr. Henshaw grew up outside Boston and earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from Pacific University in 1967. Following graduation, he served five years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era as an optometrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. While there, he received advanced training in vision therapy under Bob Kraskin, a nationally recognized leader in developmental optometry and visual rehabilitation. This mentorship provided extensive hands-on experience treating visual-related learning challenges and complex visual conditions. He received post-grad education from Berkeley College of Optometry in eye pharmacology and Computer vision. He has attended continuing education for decades, mostly in the field of vision therapy.

Continuing a Tradition of Vision Therapy in Lodi

In 1973, Dr. Henshaw relocated to Lodi and assumed the practice originally founded in the early 1900s by Dr. Calvin Looser, an early advocate of vision therapy. He continues this longstanding tradition of dedicated care, providing:
  1. Comprehensive optometric examinations
  2. Contact Lens Services
  3. Providing and customized dispensing of eyeglasses, a long-forgotten skill in eyecare
  4. Vision therapy
  5. Visual processing evaluation and treatment
  6. Learning-related vision care (including visual factors associated with dyslexia and ADD/ADHD)
  7. Computer-related vision concerns
  8. Sports vision services
  9. Syntonic (light) therapy
His approach emphasizes functional vision — how the eyes and brain work together for reading, learning, coordination, and daily tasks.
Professional Memberships & Leadership
Dr. Henshaw is a Charter Member of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD- Now Optometric Vision Development and Rehabilitation Association - OVDRA), an organization dedicated to optometrists who focus on advanced vision therapy and visual development. He is also a member of:
Optometric Extension Program Foundation,  College of Syntonic Optometry, and the American Optometric Association (25-year member)
He previously served as President of the San Joaquin Optometric Society, reflecting his long-standing commitment to professional leadership and high standards of care. However, finding his professional association abandoning the roots of optometry, while respecting the AOA and COA, he no longer financially supports them.
Educator & Author
For three years, Dr. Henshaw hosted “The Vision Excellence Hour – With an Eye Toward Prevention” on KCBC Radio 770 AM. This call-in program to an eye doctor focused on preventive eye care, vision therapy, and functional vision topics, helping families better understand the role vision plays in learning and everyday life.
He is also the author of two books:
  1. What Would Jesus See? – A Developmental Optometrist’s Journey Through Vision Care with an Eye on the Bible
  2. Looking Over Mother’s Shoulder
Both titles are available on Amazon and at the office.
Community Involvement in Lodi
Deeply rooted in the Lodi community, Dr. Henshaw has supported Junior Achievement and served as Chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee for the Lodi Chamber of Commerce. As a member of the Lodi-Tokay Rotary Club, he has served as club secretary and Dial-A-Ride Committee Chairman and is honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. His community involvement reflects the same steady commitment that defines his practice.
Personal Life
Dr. Henshaw’s wife, Judy, is retired after a successful career as a real estate broker. Together, they enjoy time with their seven grown children, eighteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Outside the office, he enjoys aerobics, cooking, hiking, photography, reading, and computers. He attends a local Christian church and values the role of faith, family, and service in shaping both his life and practice.
Their Yorkshire Terrier, Bella, is a familiar and cheerful presence in their lives.
A Commitment to Individualized Vision Care
For more than fifty years, families in Lodi and surrounding communities have trusted Dr. Henshaw for careful evaluation, practical guidance, and personalized vision therapy. His ongoing commitment remains straightforward: helping patients see clearly, learn comfortably, and function at their highest potential through attentive, developmentally informed optometric care.
