We recommended the alternate wear program mainly for one reason. Although the lenses we use are of exceptional quality, you save money on the contact lens material. If you do not lose or tear a lens, you only need four pairs of lenses for the entire year.
How does it work? You wear one pair of lenses for one week. At the end of the week, you store those lenses in a case with solutions. Then, for the next week, you wear your second pair of contact lenses. You then alternate pairs week after week for six months. At six months, we reevaluate your contact lenses for fit and eye health and provide your second pairs.
Should a lens rip or be lost, you have a spare and can purchase a replacement from us. If you were not a part of alternative wear, you would have to purchase a box of six. Note the industry packaged lenses by six, not evenly divisible into a month! Thus, you end up purchasing more lenses than needed in a month.
The method is not endorsed by the FDA. Yet the lenses meet the FDA's extended-wear criteria. Extended wear means wearing lenses on your eyes 720 hours in a row, twice more than our alternate wear suggests in waking hours wear.
Many people wear their contact lenses far beyond the four weeks advised by the FDA, with lenses less superior to those we have limited to the alternate wear program. Also, we provide a six-month contact lens evaluation at no extra cost when you replace your two pairs of contact lenses.
Should you not be comfortable with the lack of FDA endorsement or not desire to store lenses for a week, you may purchase four six-packs for the year, and discard your lenses after four weeks. Remember, we pass the lenses along to you at our cost.
We ask you to sign a form acknowledging that you: 1. Are wearing lenses beyond the recommended period according to the FDA. 2. We informed you that the FDA recommendation is a four-week disposal. 3. You do not hold us liable for damage to you resulting only from wear of the lenses beyond four weeks.
Optometrists with your budget in mind have safely provided alternate wear for over 40 years.
