EYESTRAIN (Vergence Anomaly)
Eyestrain is a condition that makes it difficult to concentrate and move both of your eyes in coordination at the same time. The strain results from difficulty holding your eyes together as a team.

Reading and driving are two examples that require moving your eyes and concentrating at the same time.

Vergence anomaly combines the term vergence, turning your eyes inward or outward to one spot. Anomaly means abnormal. Vergence is the coordinated movement of the eyes together either inward or outward. When the eyes turn inward it is called convergence. Turning your eyes outward is divergence. If you function normally your eyes can easily turn in or out. Difficulty turning the eyes inward or outward is not normal. Thus, we call that an anomaly giving the term vergence anomaly. However, I prefer to call it eyestrain.

When you have eyestrain, you must close down your side vision and intensely center your eyes on the task you are trying to accomplish. This causes much fatigue and can lead to further vision problems.

EYE STRAIN MAY RESULT IN THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS:
1. You may be readily absorbed in favorite activities such as television or reading.
1. You may be readily absorbed in favorite activities such as television or reading.

2. You may get a stiff neck.

3. You may be easily distracted by external factors when doing a task. (ie: other people talking while you are reading)

4. Headaches are common.

5. You may always want your shoulders massaged.

6. It may be difficult to drive while others talk, especially if they talk to you.

7. You often reread for understanding.

8. You tend to be overly startled by sudden noises or movements.

9. Teeth clenching is common.

10. Difficulty organizing often occurs.

11. You may have a need for multiple stimulation, like constantly changing T. V. channels or listening to music while reading. Some can’t even study without the TV running in the background.

12. You have difficulty relaxing.

13. You are noted for being "uptight."
Now how do we fix this?

WHAT IS THE FIRST STEP? It is LENS THERAPY.
For most special glasses to prevent eyestrain while doing desk and digital work can be a big help. Lens therapy relaxes your eyes by making the reading material appear further away and thus less stressful.
Some need more than lens therapy alone, and they must learn how to eliminate the strain within their eyes. That requires vision therapy - learning how to use your eyes in a stress-free, relaxing, and efficient way.

WHAT IS THE SECOND STEP if Lens Therapy doesn't completely resolve the eyestrain? It is DIAGNOSTIC TESTING).
Diagnostic testing helps Dr. Henshaw detect if vision therapy is right for you and then, which vision therapy method is best for you.

It also shows your vision problem to you. You may bring an observer, usually a spouse, whom you wish to understand your vision condition. For children we ask for a parent to observe. The diagnostic testing not only helps the doctor determine your care but allows you to see how your eyes work, and make you more aware of your condition.
